Youth Soccer Practice Drills for Home

Help your child develop soccer skills right in your backyard! These fun, effective drills require minimal space and equipment, making them perfect for home practice.

Before You Start

What You'll Need:

  • Soccer ball (proper size for age)
  • 4-6 cones (or household items like water bottles)
  • Small goal or marked target area (optional)
  • About 20' x 20' of space

Practice Guidelines:

  • Keep sessions short (15-30 minutes for young kids)
  • Focus on fun and encouragement
  • Practice 2-3 times per week
  • Quality over quantity

Foundational Ball Control Drills

1. Toe Taps (Ages 4+)

How to Do It:

  • Place ball on ground
  • Alternate tapping top of ball with toe
  • Start slow, gradually increase speed
  • Try to do 30 seconds without stopping

Why It Works: Develops foot-eye coordination and ball familiarity.

Progression: Try with eyes closed, move backward, hop between taps.

2. Inside-Outside Touches (Ages 6+)

How to Do It:

  • Touch ball with inside of right foot
  • Touch ball with outside of right foot
  • Repeat pattern, then switch to left foot
  • Move ball in figure-8 pattern

Why It Works: Improves close control and ambidextrous skills.

Progression: Add speed, change directions, combine with turns.

3. Foundation Touches (Ages 7+)

How to Do It:

  • Right sole roll (roll ball across body)
  • Right inside touch (push ball forward)
  • Right outside touch (push ball to side)
  • Repeat on left side
  • One complete cycle = 1 rep

Why It Works: Covers all essential touches in one drill.

Progression: Time yourself, add movements, increase speed.

Dribbling Drills

4. Cone Weave (Ages 5+)

Setup: Place 4-6 cones in a line, 2-3 feet apart.

How to Do It:

  • Dribble through cones using both feet
  • Go down and back
  • Time each run

Why It Works: Develops close control and changes of direction.

Progression: Reduce cone spacing, add speed, use only weak foot.

5. Speed Dribble (Ages 6+)

Setup: Mark two points 20-30 feet apart.

How to Do It:

  • Dribble as fast as possible between points
  • Use only 2-3 touches per stride
  • Push ball ahead but maintain control

Why It Works: Teaches players to run with ball at pace.

Progression: Increase distance, add cone to dribble around, time runs.

6. Moves and Turns Practice (Ages 8+)

Moves to Practice:

  • Pull back turn (ages 6+)
  • Inside cut (ages 7+)
  • Outside cut (ages 8+)
  • Scissor move (ages 9+)
  • Step over (ages 10+)

How to Do It:

  • Dribble 5-10 yards
  • Execute move/turn
  • Accelerate away
  • Repeat 10 times each move

Why It Works: Builds 1v1 attacking skills.

Passing Drills

7. Wall Pass (Ages 6+)

Setup: Find a wall or fence.

How to Do It:

  • Stand 5-10 feet from wall
  • Pass ball against wall using inside of foot
  • Receive and control return
  • Pass again with opposite foot
  • Aim for 20 consecutive passes

Why It Works: Perfect for developing passing accuracy and first touch.

Progression: Increase distance, add one-touch passes, vary heights.

8. Target Practice (Ages 7+)

Setup: Create targets on wall or set up cones as goals.

How to Do It:

  • Mark 3-4 targets at different heights
  • Take 10 shots at each target
  • Use both feet
  • Track accuracy

Why It Works: Improves passing precision and technique.

Progression: Increase distance, make targets smaller, add movement before pass.

Shooting Drills

9. Finishing Practice (Ages 8+)

Setup: Set up small goal or mark target area.

How to Do It:

  • Dribble toward goal
  • Shoot from 10-15 feet
  • Vary shooting locations
  • Use both feet
  • Take 20 shots total

Why It Works: Develops shooting technique and accuracy.

Progression: Add defender pressure (parent), shoot while moving, increase distance.

10. First Touch and Shoot (Ages 9+)

How to Do It:

  • Parent/partner tosses ball
  • Control with one touch
  • Shoot with second touch
  • Practice from different angles
  • 10 reps each angle

Why It Works: Simulates game situations where you need to control and shoot quickly.

Making It Fun

Set Goals: Track improvements (number of touches, accuracy percentages)

Create Competitions: Race against clock, beat previous scores

Add Variety: Change drills every 5-10 minutes

Celebrate Success: Acknowledge effort and improvement

Sample 30-Minute Practice

  1. Warm-up: Toe taps and foundation touches (5 min)
  2. Dribbling: Cone weave drill (5 min)
  3. Moves: Practice 2-3 different moves (10 min)
  4. Passing: Wall passes (5 min)
  5. Shooting: Finishing practice (5 min)
