Soccer Positions Explained for Parents

Understanding soccer positions helps you appreciate your child's role on the field.

Goalkeeper (GK)

The last line of defense. Must be brave, have good hands, and communicate well. Specialized position requiring unique skills.

Defenders

Center Backs: Tall, strong players who win headers and make tackles. The defensive anchors.

Full Backs: Fast defenders who also push forward to support attacks. Must have good endurance.

Midfielders

Defensive Midfielders: Shield the defense, win the ball, start attacks. Requires tactical intelligence.

Central Midfielders: Box-to-box players involved in both defense and attack. Soccer's engine room.

Attacking Midfielders/Wingers: Creative players who create chances and score goals. Speed and skill are key.

Forwards/Strikers

Primary goal scorers. Need finishing ability, positioning sense, and composure under pressure.

For Young Players

At younger ages (U8-U10), many teams rotate positions so players learn all roles. Specialization typically begins around U12-U14. Let coaches guide position selection based on strengths.
