Soccer Nutrition for Young Athletes
Essential nutrition guide for youth soccer players. Pre-game meals, hydration strategies, and recovery nutrition for young athletes.
Soccer Nutrition for Young Athletes
Proper nutrition fuels performance and supports growing bodies. Here's what young soccer players need.
Daily Nutrition Basics
Carbohydrates: Primary fuel source. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables should make up 50-60% of diet.
Protein: Builds and repairs muscle. Lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and dairy. Aim for protein at each meal.
Healthy Fats: Support brain development and energy. Nuts, avocados, olive oil.
Hydration: Drink water throughout the day, not just at practice. Aim for half body weight in ounces daily.
Pre-Game Nutrition
3-4 Hours Before: Full meal with carbs, lean protein, low fat. Pasta with chicken, rice bowls, or sandwiches.
1-2 Hours Before: Light snack if needed. Banana, granola bar, or crackers.
30 Minutes Before: Small easily digestible carbs if necessary. Applesauce or sports drink.
During Games/Practice
Water: Primary focus. Sports drinks for sessions over 60 minutes in heat.
Half-time: Orange slices or small snacks for energy boost in longer games.
Post-Game Recovery
Within 30 Minutes: Combination of carbs and protein. Chocolate milk is ideal.
Full Meal: Within 2 hours. Replenish energy stores with balanced meal.
Texas Heat Considerations
Austin summers are brutal. Increase water intake, consider electrolyte drinks for long training sessions, and watch for dehydration signs (dark urine, dizziness, fatigue).
